Military Law: conscientious objector discharges & court-martial defense for war resisters

Military Law Practice

I have worked as an independent civilian attorney in military courts since 2006. I have worked a variety of cases (including courts-martial, administrative boards, free speech, conscientious objection, medical discharges and military sexual trauma) from the US Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force.

Today I focus my work on two areas of concern:

Conscientious objection

Through my work with the Legal Support Project of the Center for Conscience in Action, I provide low and no-cost legal assistance to members of the US military who are seeking discharge on the grounds of conscientious objection. To find out more about this work, please visit our website

Defense of War Resisters

Many servicemembers have felt compelled to take illegal actions out of their moral, political or personal convictions, including going AWOL/UA, missing movement, refusing to deploy, or even seeking asylum in another country. For such servicemembers, legal assistance is often needed to be able to move on with their lives. I take on a select number of such cases, providing zealous advocacy in my clients' desired interests. If you are a war resister and need legal representation, please contact me to see if I can take on your case. If I am unable to take your case, I will do my best to find you another attorney who can assist you.

Important notice for members of the military: It is illegal for me as an attorney to advise anyone to break the law, even if following the law might violate one's conscience. Please understand that it is against the law for a member of the military to leave their unit without lawful reason (aka "going AWOL or UA"). It is also against the law to refuse to obey a lawful order to deploy.
